The recently finished PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) reached a peak viewership of 851,000, according to a report from Esports Charts.

The 2022 PMGC peak viewership tournament surpassed the 2021 PMGC’s viewership of 646K but fell short of the 2020 edition’s viewership, which garnered over 3.8 million.

The final championship match of the tournament attracted the highest number of concurrent viewers.

The viewership graph for the esports tournament also saw an increase on the last day, with the second (round 14) and third (round 15) matches of the day reaching 700K and 726K concurrent viewers.

The fourth and fifth matches of the day also made the top five peak viewership chart of the tournament, with round 16 garnering 650k and round 17 pegged at 675k.

On average, the tournament drew 272,758 viewers and generated over 27.3 million hours of viewership.

The Grand Finals of the PMGC 2022 were broadcast in 14 languages and live-streamed across six platforms, such as YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, Trove, VK.com and Tik Tok.

Youtube was the most popular streaming platform for the event, while Indonesian was the most popular language, with the largest number of viewers watching the tournament broadcast specifically in that language.

The event which was hosted in Jakarta, Indonesia, featured live performances by three popular Indonesian celebrities on the second and third days.

The tournament saw Turkish team S2G Esports crowned as champions after besting DRS GAMING to the title in the Grand Finals on January 8 at the Jakarta International Expo. S2G attained 190 points beating DRS with a 32 points gap.

The 2022 PMGC featured 51 global squads competing for a $4 million prize pool. The League Stage of the annual competition, which had a prize pool of $2.5 million, finished on December 4, while the grand finals was allotted a prize pool of $1.5 million.

In addition to S2G Esports, other standout teams in the tournament included DRS Gaming from Nepal, which finished in second place and Brazilian team Alpha 7, which also had a good run that led them to a third-place finish in the tournament only shy by 3 points.

The Nepal franchise caught the attention of fans with its unpredictable performance and was one of the favourites to win the event with esports betting sites.

Meanwhile, Nova Esports, the 2020 and 2021 PUBG world champions failed to live up to expectations, finishing in ninth place. GodLike Stalwart and IHC Esports had impressive comebacks to secure fourth and fifth place, respectively, with GodLike and A7 tying in points as both teams recorded 156 points each.

At the grand finals, it was revealed that the first international event of 2023 will be the PUBG Mobile World Invitational, which is scheduled to take place in July in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The fourth season of the PUBG Global Championship will be held in Turkey.

Tencent, the world’s largest video game company and partial owners of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Corporation, have set the inaugural season of the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) for late November with a record-breaking US $2 million prize pool.

“Proud to announce the PUBGMOBILE Global Championship season ZERO! Where all the Top Professional invited teams across all regions will participate, including China to crown the Global Champion this year 2020! The event will host a prize pool of 2 million USD,” read the announcement on Tencent’s Twitter account.

The PMGC is the result of Tencent’s decision to merge the PUBG Mobile World Leagues (PMWL) and PUBG Mobile World Championship (PMWC), which were postponed and reshaped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new event features the largest prize pool in PUBG Mobile history. The $2 million kitty is almost five times the previous best of $476,000 at the PUBG Mobile Club Open Fall Split Global Finals and ranks among the top 35 esports prize funds of all time.

The move from Tencent mimics a similar play made by the Electronic Sports League (ESL) in March, when it was announced that the ESL One Rio Major for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive would merge with the 2020 Fall Major to form a single CS:GO Major with an increased prize pool.

The PMGC will feature 20 leading teams from all regions of the world, including China, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East, Americas and Europe.
Teams will have the chance to qualify for the event via the ongoing PUBGM Club Opens (PMCO) and PUBGM Pro Leagues (PMPL).

Not many details about the tournament have been revealed as yet, but it is expected the inaugural season of the PMGC will use a similar format to the PMWL. There are also plans for the tournament to be held across multiple venues with live audiences if the COVID-19 situation becomes more manageable by November.

Alongside the announcement of the PMGC, Tencent also unveiled the upgraded 1.0 version of PUBGM, which is scheduled to go live on Tuesday, September 8 and will feature new technology to go along with the improved gameplay features.

Updates include improvements to characters and their movement, the game’s main lobby environments, weapons, maps, and the gameplay itself with the addition of detailed particles, smoke, air blasts, and other lightning and shading effects for a more realistic feel.
