The League of Legends Spanish regional competition, Liga de Videojuegos Profesional (LVP), has announced that Rebels Gaming will compete in the top-tier Superliga in the upcoming 2023 season.

The Spanish esports organization was founded by Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, who also doubles as the President of the franchise.? ?The announcement was made via a press release posted on the official website of the Spanish esports franchise.?

?Rebels Gaming will be part of the League of Legends Superliga from 2023, the announcement read.? ?

LVP (GRUP MEDIAPRO) has selected the candidacy of the team owned by David De Gea, a Spanish footballer who plays for Manchester United, after an accession process that was opened in the month of September to occupy the place left by G2 Arctic.?

?De Gea expressed his excitement about the news, describing it as an important step in the franchises strategy for steady growth. He stated that it was a natural expectation owing to the organizations presence in the top-tier Valorant Regional League.?

?We are delighted that Rebels Gaming is joining the League of Legends Superliga. It is an important step for the clubs strategy, De Gea said.?

?We were already in the biggest VALORANT regional league and being part of the League of Legends one was a natural step for the club. We arrive to work hard and earn our spot on the scene.?

?The Chief Executive Officer of LVP, Jordi Soler, also commented on Rebels Gaming’s acceptance into the league. He welcomed the franchise to the league and also commended the other applicants who were not selected.? ?

We welcome Rebels Gaming to the League of Legends Superliga, Soler said.? ?

They have a value proposal and a medium and long-term plan, from an economic, sports, communication and content point of view, which will surely help the Superliga to reach the next level. From LVP, we thank the rest of the clubs that have submitted their candidacy to be part of the most prestigious eSports competition in the country.”?

?The franchise will be taking over the slot left open by G2 Arctic, who recently disbanded their team and quit the league. Rebels’ bid was said to be the highest-valued in the selection process.?

?The franchise will compete for the league title with the Giants Gaming, Movistar Riders, Universidad Catlica San Antonio de Murcia Tokiers (UCAM), Bar?a eSports, Fnatic Team Queso, Team Heretics, Fi Network KOI, BISONS ECLUB, and Guasones.?

In contrast to other footballer-owned organizations, which typically focus on FIFA and other football games, Rebels Gamings path was a different one. The Spanish esports organization fields active rosters competing in various esports titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Rainbow Six.

?De Gea, who is a gaming enthusiast in his leisure time off the field, launched Rebels Gaming in November 2021. He has received a lot of encouragement from current and former Manchester United colleagues with his endeavors in the esports scene.

Juan Mata, a former player for Man United, and Bruno Fernandez, a current teammate of De Gea, have both been vocal advocates of the company.? ?Mata and Fernandez officially acquired shares in Rebels Gaming in October 2022.

In 2022, Rebels Gaming struck a deal with Razer and unveiled their new headquarters in Madrid, featuring a cutting-edge complex for players to train, play, and socialize.

KOI has gotten a head start in bolstering its roster ahead of the second half of the 2022 season. They have made two crucial signings that could help them be a lot stronger.

Their first high-profile signing is of former Astralis top laner Matti “WhiteKnight” Sormunen. With the end of the 2022 LEC Spring Split, the Finnish player parted ways with Astralis, and the announcement was made by the team’s official Twitter page.

WhiteKnight’s addition to the team will undoubtedly be a big boost. The 26-year-old has been on the scene for a while and has made it to the last three splits, competing at the highest level in European LoL.

Meanwhile, this would be the first time WhiteKnight plays in the Super League, even though he has been around a lot. He has played for six different teams, including Ninjas in Pyjamas, BIG, Unicorns of Love, with the most recent being Astralis.

While having a solid roster is a great plan, having a better coach who can lead them will almost guarantee victories. To that effect, the organization has acquired the services of Danusch “Arvindir” Fischer. The German has been on the scene since 2014, with his longest spell coming at BIG (three and a half years).

He will be replacing Jess “Falco” Prez Rubio, who had a rather short run with the team. Falco joined KOI in December 2021 after its formation and did a decent job in helping them finish 4th in the LVP Superliga Orange after losing to BISOBS ECLUB in the Losers’ Round 2.

Arvindir will bring a lot of experience and a winning mentality to the Spanish League of Legends team. While he has had a great run as a head coach throughout his career, winning the European Masters championships in 2019 is perhaps his greatest accomplishment.

There have been reports that team owners Ibai Llanos and FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique wanted Arvindir to lead the team from inception, but they were unable to secure the deal.

Although the team is relatively new, they are looking to announce themselves in the Super League as quickly as possible. As at the time of writing, no further changes to the roster have been reported. However, they could still pull off one or two more acquisitions before the start of the summer split.

After an exciting Spring Split and a highly entertaining European Masters tournament, Spain’s SuperLiga Orange is kicking off again this weekend.

Europe’s strongest regional league will once again be home to top-tier organisations with even more ambitious players eager to prove themselves, which means that we’re in for great matches right from the very beginning.

Read up on the League of Legends betting guide here:

The first week of the competition will see the following matches:

KIYF eSports Club vs. Dragons E.C

Right off the bat we will be able to watch the return of Dragons E.C. to the scene. The legendary Spanish organisation has reformed with a new roster, and a match against a revamped KIYF will immediately put them to a serious test.

Dragons sport a strong core of three ex-G2V players in the bot lane and jungle, in addition to one of Europe’s best non-LCS top laners in the former KlikTech star Sacre. A yet unproven young mid laner could be a potential weak spot in the team, as KIYF have their strongest player ZaZee in that position. Their talented youngster Orome in the top lane also has a great chance to prove himself against his former Balkan rival, and will surely put up a good fight. However, I don’t think that the rest of KIYF is good enough to beat the new Dragons, particularly when comparing their Czech bot lane to E.C.’s veterans Nixerino and Homi.

eMonkeyz vs. Penguins

The two teams that perhaps disappointed the most last season meet next, and it will be interesting to see what Penguins can bring to the table after a decent EU Masters showing. eMonkeyz, on the other hand, are yet to break a season-long winless streak.

Penguins have retained the bot lane that kept them afloat most of the time in EU Masters, as well as their incredibly volatile mid laner Siler. That alone should give them an edge over the unimpressive roster of eMonkeyz, who are still holding onto three of the players from their awful previous run. An unknown player in the mid lane could be an interesting factor if he is able to play the hard carry his team have desperately needed, but if that is the only thing eMonkeyz can hope for, Penguins should win this match fairly easily.

ASUS ROG Army vs. Vodafone Giants

Two former champions of the league will duke it out in the next matchup. ASUS have made substantial changes to their roster, retaining only their ADC, while Giants are coming off an excellent last season with their squad intact.

ASUS are fielding an interesting team consisting of lower-league veterans with tons of experience in various competitions. Most of them have only ever been role players for their teams, and it is difficult to say if ASUS will have anyone ready to take over the role of a main carry threat. The mismatch in the top lane could hit them the hardest: Kaze has been playing for a long time, but Giants’ Yoppa has been in great shape for quite some time and will likely be significantly stronger. If ASUS’s mid laner Lukezy doesn’t step up massively, Giants should have a much better chance here, based on their established synergy and talent.

MAD Lions vs. Movistar Riders

A rematch of last season’s finals awaits us at the end of week 1. Movistar have had some of their 10 players leave the team, while MAD have retained their entire championship-winning squad and will be looking to smash the competition once again.

Movistar have had problems with synergy over the previous season, mostly due to constantly switching players in and out. They also issues with playing from behind, and not winning early game usually meant a quick death sentence, most notably against Illuminar in the EU Masters. MAD also dismantled them in the same way in the match for the title two months ago.

There is actually not a lot to say about MAD at this point: all of their players (except maybe Falco) have proved themselves to be very capable of beating anyone in the Spanish league, and it will be a wonder if we don’t see them in LCS next year. Anything but a victory for MAD Lions will be a huge upset here.
