The 14th season of League of Legends esports is upon us, and Riot Games has announced the changes that will come into effect for the upcoming season.

Along with the announcement of where and when both the Mid-Season Invitational and World Championships will be held, Riot also confirmed the start date for each regions competitions.

However, the biggest change to the 2024 season will involve both the MSI and Worlds, as the winner of the Mid-Season Invitational will earn an automatic spot at LoL Worlds 2024, and the next best-performing region will gain an additional slot for their region at the World Championships.

Riot explained that they want to continue increasing the stakes around MSI and create a stronger connection between MSI and Worlds.

Although the winner of MSI will automatically qualify for Worlds later in the year, Riot has also announced that the team that qualifies for Worlds will need to commit to success and must qualify for their regions summer playoffs.

Due to the changes, the LEC, LCK, LCS and LPL will have three Worlds slots, while the PCS and VCS will retain two slots, and the LLA and CBLOL will keep their singular slots.

The Mid-Season Invitational will be held in Chengdu, China, from May 1C19, and the World Championships will take place from September 25CNovember 2 across Europe, with Berlin, Paris and London set to host different stages of the tournament.

Finally, the start date of every regional tournament has been confirmed by Riot Games, with the list below displaying the start date of each season.

Regional season start dates

  • LEC : January 13
  • LLA : January 16
  • LCK : January 17
  • PCS : January 19
  • LCS : January 20
  • VCS : January 20

After years of GAM Esports and Saigon Buffalo dominating the Vietnamese League of Legends scene, a new contender has finally emerged to represent Vietnam at the 2023 League of Legends World Championship.

Team Whales secured their spot at Worlds 2023 with an impressive 3-1 victory over Team Secret in the VCS lower bracket final.

This is a significant moment for Vietnamese League of Legends, as it marks the first time since 2019 that a team other than GAM or Saigon Buffalo will proudly represent the region on the global stage.

For Team Whales, this triumph is the result of years of hard work and unwavering dedication.

Team Whales was founded in 2020 and has rapidly climbed the ranks of the VCS.

In 2022, they achieved a second-place finish in the VCS Summer Split, and in the current year, they reached the semifinals of the VCS Spring Split.

With their ticket to Worlds 2023 now secured, Team Whales is set to embark on an exhilarating journey where they will compete against some of the world’s top teams.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in South Korea, from October 10 to November 19.

Team Whales, as an esports organization established in 2020, is involved in various games, including League of Legends, VALORANT, and PUBG Mobile.

The League of Legends team, in particular, has established itself as one of the top teams in the VCS, with two VCS championships under their belt.

They have also had the honour of representing Vietnam at both the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship.

Team Whales’ roster consists of talented players in key positions, including Nguyen “Nagiya” Vo Anh Hoang in the top lane, Tran “BeanJ” Van Chinh in the jungle, Le “Glory” Ngoc Vinh in the mid lane, Tran “Artemis” Quoc Hung in the bot lane, and Tran “Bie” Duc Hieu as support.

The Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) withdrawal from the League of Legends 2020 World Championship has ushered in a massive format overhaul for the seasons culminating event, with fewer teams in the play-in stage and a free pass to the group stage awarded to one of the major regional representatives.

As confirmed by Riot Games this Tuesday, national travel restrictions related to COVID-19 mean the two qualifying LoL teams from Vietnam will not be able to attend this year’s event in Shanghai, China. As a result of these changes, the 2020 LoL Worlds will have 22 rather than 24 teams fighting for the prestigious Summoner’s Cup.

“Over the past several weeks, we explored every possible option to include VCS teams while ensuring the safety of VCS players and the delivery of a world class event,” read the announcement.

“VCS teams and VCS fans have been an irreplaceable fixture of Worlds, but in consideration of current circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to proceed without them this year.”

Team Flash had already secured their spot in the LoL Worlds play-in stage, where they were set to be joined by the winner of Thursday’s VCS Summer semi-final between GAM Esports and EVOS Esports.

While none of those teams will take part in the tournament, Riot Games have decided to award the two VCS representatives with a share of the prize pool as though they had participated.

The developer also confirmed some big changes to the format for the play-in stage, opting for a structure that will have minimal impact on the broadcast schedule.

The 10 remaining teams in the play-in stage will be seeded into two groups of five. Each of these groups will feature a single round-robin cycle with the first-placed teams advancing to the group stage and the last-placed teams eliminated.

The third- and fourth-placed teams in each group will then play a best-of-five (Bo5) series where the loser bows out and the winner advances to a Bo5 series against the second-placed team from the opposite group. The winner of those matches will then qualify for the main event.

Since the numbers wouldn’t add up without additional adjustments, Riot Games had to pick one team from the play-ins to automatically advance to the group stage. In the end, they decided to award a free pass to the third seed from the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) due to the region’s success in previous international events.

As it stands now, all regions except for the LCK, Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL), Turkish Championship League (TCL) and League of Legends Japan League (LJL) have already locked in their representatives for the tournament.

The 2020 LoL Worlds will mark the first time since 2015 that the reigning champions won’t be attending the tournament, since FunPlus Phoenix did not make it through the LPL Regional Finals. This year will also mark the return of LGD Gaming, who were last seen at Worlds in 2015 ,and the first-ever appearance of Top Esports as the LPL’s top seed.

Other first-time appearances include: JD Gaming (LPL), Suning (LPL), Rogue (LEC), MAD Lions (LEC), FlyQuest (LCS), DRX (LCK), Machi Esports (PCS), PSG Talon (PCS), Rainbow7 (LLA) and Legacy Esports (OPL).

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship is slated to kick off on Friday, September 25 with the opening play-in matches, followed by the main event from Saturday, October 3.

GAM ESPORTS vs EVOS ESPORTS VCS SUMMER BETTING PREVIEW

GAM Esports are scheduled to lock horns with EVOS Esports this Saturday in their opening fixture of the 2020 Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) Summer Split.

GAM finished the VCS Spring regular season at the top of the leaderboard with a near-perfect 13-1 record and equally impressive 27-5 game differential. Despite their dominant performance through the regular season, Tr?n “Kiaya” Duy Sang and his crew couldn’t finish the job and went down 2-3 to Team Flash in the grand finals.

During the off-season, GAM made a couple of roster changes. They parted ways with support Nguy?n “Palette” H?i Trung and ADC ?? “Blazes” ?nh Sang, replacing them with ADC Hu?nh “Jisoo” H?u Sang and mid laner Tr?n “Genza” H?ng Phc.

GAM also decided to freshen up their coaching personnel. Last week they acquired ex-V Gaming Adonis support Nguy?n “Scary” H?i H as the team’s analyst and brought in former Percent Esports coach Phan “JackieWind” Huy Phong as a replacement for Hu?nh “Yuna” V?n Tan, who left for Saigon Buffalo in May.

GAM recently played at the Pulsefire Cup, where they made it through the group stage without any issues. Although they lost their bout with Saigon Buffalo, GAM picked up two easy wins against Team Secret and Percent Esports to book a spot in the final four. In the playoffs, GAM got their revenge against Team Flash (2-0) and made easy work of Saigon Buffalo (3-1) in the grand finals to claim the trophy and ?100,000,000 (US $4,300) in prize money.

However, things turned sour for GAM at the Mid-Season Showdown, where they lost against two Pacific Championship Series (PCS) teams in Talon Esports and Machi Esports. GAM finished the tournament with a 1-5 map record, which they earned with a 1-1 draw against Team Flash and 0-2 losses against Machi and the eventual champions, Talon.

EVOS Esports enter the second split of the season after a fairly solid showing in the VCS Spring Split. They finished the regular season in fourth placed and climbed into third in the post-season, which was an improvement on their fifth-place finish in the VCS 2019 Summer Split.

EVOS made two roster changes in May, when they signed ex-GAM top laner Ph?m “Zeros” Minh L?c and parted ways with mid laner Ph?m “Coyote” Qu?c Bnh. It remains to be seen whether EVOS will field Zeros in this match since he played only eight games with GAM last split, but he produced far better showings than his new teammates Nguy?n “But1” L Tu?n Anh and Tr?n “TH” L Trung H?u, so it’s likely we will see a bit more from him in the upcoming months.

EVOS also participated at Pulsefire Cup 2020, but they saw less success than GAM. They finished the group stage second with a 1-2 record but fell flat against Saigon Buffalo (0-2) in the semi-finals, thus winding up in third-fourth place.

GAM ESPORTS vs EVOS ESPORTS VCS SUMMER BETTING PREDICTIONS

The most recent bout between these two sides took place at the start of March, when we saw GAM Esports come away with a convincing 2-0 win. Both maps were very one-sided, although the EVOS top laners had very little impact. Additionally, in game two, Zeros almost singlehandedly carried GAM to victory on Aatrox, so its fair to say EVOS will be better prepared this weekend if they decide to field Zeros.

Although EVOS lost twice to GAM last split, they’re not a bad team. Mid laner Hu?nh “Pake” Thanh Hong, ADC V? “Divkid” Thanh Tng and jungler Nguy?n “Sorn” Minh Ho are some of the best in the VCS in their respective roles and if Zeros can find his old form from 2019, EVOS will become legitimate VCS Summer title contenders.

Both teams tend to start strong in a new split, so we can expect a close bout with all three maps played. A few bucks on EVOS as outsiders might also be worth considering.

GAM ESPORTS vs TEAM SECRET VCS SPRING SPLIT BETTING PREVIEW

Team Secret will look to avenge their loss in Week 3 when they clash with League of Legends Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) frontrunners GAM Esports this Saturday.

Team Secret enter Week 8 of the VCS Spring Split with a 6-4 record and third place in the standings, which is quite an impressive feat for the ex-Lowkey Esports squad. Their placement guarantees them a spot in the next stage of the split, but their road to the summit is far from over.

So far this season, Secret have defeated FTV Esports (twice), CERBERUS Esports, EVOS Esports, V Gaming Adonis and Team Flash but failed to see the same success in their meetings with Dashing Buffalo (twice), GAM Esports, and in the reverse fixture against CERBERUS last week.

The rematch with CERBERUS was close throughout. Although Secret completely outplayed their adversaries in game one, Nguy?n “Hani” Tu?n Pht dropped the ball in the subsequent two games and allowed CERBERUS to pocket a much-needed 2-0 win to keep themselves in the race for a top-four finish.

GAM Esports enter Week 8 as undisputed league leaders, having won all but one of their 11 games played. Their supremacy in the league should not come as a shock to anyone, seeing how they dominated the 2019 VCS Summer Split with an 11-3 record in the regular season and a perfect run through the playoffs.

The reason behind GAM’s regional dominance over the last year is quite obvious: they have star players in every position. While it is hard to single out one player in such a strong team, it would be fair to say ?? “Levi” Duy Khnh has done the most to help GAM secure top spot in the league standings this split.

Levi’s deep champion pool and great understanding of the game make him one of the best junglers in the VCS, as there are only a few other junglers who can play at the same pace. GAM can also count on their mid laner L “Dia1” Ph Quy, who is ranked among the top players the league with a 6.96 KDA, 8.64 CSPM and 67.7% KPAR.

GAM ESPORTS vs TEAM SECRET VCS SPRING SPLIT BETTING PREDICTIONS

It is hard to find a solid reason to side with Team Secret over GAM for this match. Not only have the league leaders proven they are a level above all other VCS teams, they have already secured a 2-0 win over Secret this split.

It’s worth noting that this match holds no importance for GAM in terms of their playoff ambitions. Some might say that could cause them to take this match lightly, but we would not count on that factor having too much of an impact on their performance.

The fact of the matter is that Secret struggled with their showings against Dashing Buffalos in Week 6 and CERBERUS in Week 7, which is not something that inspires much optimism as they get ready to face the VCSs top dogs.

GAM have shown better form in recent weeks and should have no issues securing a clean sweep. Since BetOnline has the -1.5 map handicap priced at -104.17, don’t think twice before siding with Levi and his crew to secure their ninth perfect win of the split.

DASHING BUFFALO VS FTV ESPORTS VCS SPRING SPLIT BETTING PREVIEW

FTV Esports are set to lock horns with two-time national champions Dashing Buffalo in Week 7 of the League of Legends Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) Spring Split, where Hu?nh “Police” Thi?c Tu?n and co. will look to claim their second win of the season.

Following a disastrous 2019 season, FTV Esports found themselves on the back foot again as they suffered four clean sweeps against Lowkey Esports (now Team Secret), Team Flash, Dashing Buffalo and CERBERUS Esports in the opening three weeks of the split.

Although they saw some progress in the following three weeks when they pushed EVOS Esports, GAM Esports and Team Flash to a three-map series and claimed their first win of the season against V Gaming Adonis, FTV as a whole have left a lot to be desired.

Poor results are nothing surprising for this side, seeing how FTV finished last season in seventh place with a 3-11 record. What is surprising, however, is that FTV failed to acquire any notable upgrades during the offseason.

Besides the signing of former CERBERUS Esports’ jungler V?n “Potm” H?u B?o, the team made no roster changes up until earlier this month when they acquired ex-Cherry Esports support H? “Akeno” Trung H?u and rookie mid laner Bi “Froggy” H?i Minh.

Potm has struggled thus far with his 5.12 CSPM, 0.95 KDA and 51.3% KPAR, while Akeno has seen even less success with 0.63 KDA, 41.7% KPAR and 223 GPM. On a more positive note, Froggy has looked solid with 2.78 KDA, 190.33 CSPM, 370 GPM and 69.4% KPAR in three games played.

Potm and Akeno have already been benched, meaning FVT are currently fielding the same roster they did last season except for Froggy in the mid lane and Tr?n 1Ground D?n in the bottom lane instead of Tr?n “Bie” ??c Hi?u, who left for EVOS in December.

Dashing Buffalo enter their 10th fixture of the season with a 4-5 record next to their name, which put them fourth in the league standings alongside CERBERUS Esports and EVOS Esports.

So far this split, ??ng “Bigkoro” Ng?c Ti and his squad have defeated FTV and Team Secret (twice), lost to Team Flash, CERBERUS Esports, EVOS Esports, GAM Esports, and split their two meetings with V Gaming Adonis.

While a 4-5 record is a solid outcome on paper, most of Buffalo’s wins have come against the weaker teams. A 2-0 record against Team Secret is promising, but the same can’t be said for their 1-1 tally against V Gaming Adonis and 0-1 against EVOS and CERBERUS Esports.

DASHING BUFFALO VS FTV ESPORTS VCS SPRING SPLIT BETTING PREDICTIONS

Dashing Buffalo are priced as favourites to win this Saturday, but backing FTV Esports on a +1.5 map handicap might be a better option at the odds offered.

In their first meeting, Buffalo crushed FTV in just under 30 minutes. However, it’s worth noting that Nguy?n “Victory” Qu?c Th?ng’s poor performance in the mid lane played a huge factor in that loss. His questionable engages and poor laning allowed Nguy?n “DK” ??ng Khoa to get ahead on Rumble and use his advantage to decimate FTV in the teamfights by dropping down The Equalizer, which worked well in combination with Jarvan’s Cataclysm.

For this game, Victory will be benched and replaced by Froggy, who has had a couple of solid showings in his three games played. Froggy also has a diverse and deep champion pool that should allow him to nullify Buffalo’s win condition, or at least slow down DK enough for FTV to stand a chance.

Although it’s hard to expect FTV to win this weekend, Buffalo’s overly aggressive playstyle should help FTV chip at least one map.

Following the clash between EU and NA at Rift Rivals Blue, the spotlight moves to Asia, where Rift Rivals LCK-LPL-LMS-VCS, also known as Rift Rivals Red, is set to begin on July 4.

The 2019 instalment of Rift Rivals Red will be the first to feature four League of Legends esports regions instead of the usual three. Joining the LCK, LPL and LMS will be the Vietnamese region (VCS) with EVOS Esports and Dashing Buffalo flying the flag for their nation.

To avoid mass changes to the format, the LMS and VCS teams will join forces and face off against the standalone LCK and LPL regions. That means both LCK and LPL will enter the tournament with four teams, while LMS and VCS will both have only their best two sides.

The teams that qualified as the best few in their regions are as follows:

LCK: SK Telecom T1, Griffin, Kingzone DragonX, DAMWON Gaming
LPL: Invictus Gaming, JD Gaming, FunPlus Phoenix, Top Esports
LMS-VCS: Flash Wolves, MAD Team, EVOS Esports, Dashing Buffalo (formerly known as Phong V? Buffalo)

The event will be divided into a group stage and a bracket stage. In the group stage, teams will play against all other teams with the same seeding (e.g. the second-ranked team from LCK will face the second-ranked team from LPL). All of the matches will be Bo1, with the winning region earning a direct pass into the finals.

The remaining two regions will enter the semi-finals, where they will compete in a Bo5 Blind Relay Race. In that part of the tournament, the regional coaches will get to choose which team represents their region for each game. No team will be allowed to play more than once, unless the series goes to five games. The winner will advance to the finals series, which will use the same format.

LCK and LMS-VCS will hope they can dethrone LPL, who have won both of the last two Rift Rivals Red tournaments. While it won’t be an easy task to defeat JD Gaming, FunPlus Phoenix, Top Esports and the reigning world champions Invictus Gaming, the 2019 MSI has proven anything is possible and that even Invictus have an Achilles’ heel.

The new addition means a different format compared to last year, when LCK, LPL and LMS teams competed against each other.

Group stage matchups will be decided by results in the Spring Split, with teams of the same seeding to face one another.

For example: SKT, who finished first in LCK, will play IG, who finished first in LPL.

All of the matches in the group stage will be played in a single round robin, Bo1 format.

The top region at the end of the group games will then advance directly into the finals, while the second- and third-placed regions get another shot at glory in the semi-finals.

In the semis, teams will face off in a Bo5 relay with the matchups determined by the coaches from both sides.

The winner of the semi-finals will then take on the first-placed region from group stages in another Bo5 relay.

The teams competing in the tournament are as follows:

LCK – SKT T1, Griffin, Kingzone DragonX, DAMWON Gaming
LPL – Invictus Gaming, JD Gaming, FunPlus Phoenix, Topsports Gaming
LMS – Flash Wolves, MAD Team
VCS – Phong Vu Buffalo, EVOS Esports
